Treadmill care
A few minutes a month keeps a treadmill quiet, safe and working for years. Always follow your manual first.
Every week#
- Wipe the handrails, console and belt edges.
- Vacuum under and around the treadmill; dust gets into the motor.
- Check the power cord isn't pinched or frayed.
Every month or so#
- Check the belt is centered. If it drifts, most manuals say to turn the rear roller bolt a quarter turn at a time with the belt running slowly.
- Check tension: the belt should lift a few inches at the middle, and shouldn't slip when you push off.
- Lubricate the deck if your manual calls for it, using the lubricant it specifies (often silicone).
Common noises#
Squeaking often means the deck needs lubricating or a bolt needs tightening. Thumping can be a worn belt seam or a roller. Grinding or burning smells mean stop and call a technician.
Safety first#
Unplug before cleaning or adjusting anything other than belt tracking, keep children and pets away, and always clip on the safety key.
