Walking at any age

It's never too late to start, and walking is one of the best things you can do for balance, strength and independence.

Start with balance#

Use the side rails, especially getting on and off. Start the belt at the slowest speed while standing on the side rails, then step on. Stop the belt completely before stepping off, and turn carefully.

Slow, short, often#

Five minutes at 0.8–1.5 mph is a great start. Several short walks across the day are easier than one long one. Add a minute or two each week only when it feels easy.

Medications and dizziness#

Some blood pressure and heart medications can make you lightheaded when you start or stop moving. Get up slowly, sip water, and if you feel dizzy, hold the rails, press stop and sit down.

Ask your doctor#

Make it social#

Walk while on the phone with family, or ask someone to be nearby for the first few sessions. It's safer and more fun.
