Walking and blood pressure
Regular moderate activity, like brisk walking, is a standard part of managing blood pressure. Start gently and keep your doctor in the loop.
Why it helps#
Regular aerobic activity can help lower blood pressure over time, and the benefit builds with consistency. It works alongside, not instead of, any treatment you've been prescribed.
Starting safely#
- Ask your doctor before starting, especially if your blood pressure isn't well controlled.
- Warm up for 2–3 minutes at an easy pace and cool down the same way.
- Keep to a pace where you can still talk.
- Avoid holding your breath or gripping the rails hard.
Medications#
Some blood pressure medicines can make you lightheaded, especially when you stop suddenly. Slow the belt down gradually and step off carefully.
Stop and get help if#
You have chest pain or pressure, severe headache, dizziness, confusion, or breathlessness that doesn't settle quickly when you slow down.
