Eating around walks
For a gentle walk, you don't need special food. Here's what does help.
Before#
Walking on an empty stomach is fine for most people for short walks. If you get shaky or light-headed, have something small an hour before: a piece of fruit, toast, or yogurt.
Right after a big meal#
A slow 10-minute walk after eating is a great habit and can help with blood sugar. Just keep it easy for the first half hour.
After#
You don't need a protein shake or a reward snack after a short walk. Eat your normal next meal. Walking doesn't burn enough to justify a treat, and that's okay: the point is the habit.
If you have diabetes#
Talk to your care team about timing walks around meals and medication, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, which can cause low blood sugar. Keep a fast-acting sugar source nearby.
