- Chair strength moves to make walking easier
Chair strength
Strong legs and hips make the treadmill feel easier. You only need a sturdy chair.
Sit-to-stand#
Sit on the front of the chair, feet flat. Stand up, then sit back down slowly. Use your hands if you need to. Aim for 5–10.
Seated marching#
Sit tall and lift one knee, then the other, for 30–60 seconds.
Heel raises#
Stand behind the chair holding the back. Rise onto your toes, lower slowly. 10–15.
Side leg lifts#
Holding the chair, lift one leg out to the side and lower it. 8–10 each side.
Wall push-ups#
Hands on a wall at shoulder height, bend your elbows to bring your chest toward the wall, push back. 8–12.
How often#
Two or three days a week, on days you walk or not. Stop any move that causes pain, and check with your doctor if you have joint or heart concerns.
