- Is your treadmill's calorie number accurate?
The calorie number
That number on the console is an estimate, and often not a great one. Here's how to read it.
Why it's often wrong#
- Many treadmills assume a default weight unless you enter yours.
- Holding the rails reduces the work you do, but the console doesn't know.
- Fitness, walking style and body composition all change real burn.
- Some machines show gross calories (including what you'd burn anyway sitting).
Make it closer#
Enter your current weight in the treadmill's settings if it lets you, and hold the rails lightly or not at all once you feel steady.
A better estimate#
Our calorie calculator uses the standard METMetabolic equivalent. 1 MET is the energy you use sitting still. Walking at 2 mph is roughly 2.8 METs, nearly three times resting. Our calorie calculator uses METs. method with your weight and speed. It's still an estimate, but a transparent one.
Don't eat it back#
Calorie numbers make it tempting to 'earn' a snack. The real benefits of walking are for your heart, blood sugar, mood and sleep, whatever the console says.
