Walking pad vs treadmill
Both get you walking. They suit different bodies, homes and habits.
Safety and support#
- Treadmill: side rails and usually a front handlebar, plus a safety key. Better if your balance isn't steady yet.
- Walking pad: usually no rails at all. Best for people who already walk confidently.
Weight capacity#
- Treadmill: commonly 250–400 lb, with heavy-duty models higher.
- Walking pad: often 220–265 lb. Check the label carefully.
Speed and incline#
- Treadmill: walking and running speeds, often with incline.
- Walking pad: typically up to about 4 mph, usually flat.
Space and noise#
- Treadmill: needs a dedicated spot; some fold upright.
- Walking pad: slides under a sofa or bed; usually quieter.
Price#
- Walking pads are usually cheaper. A good used treadmill can cost about the same.
Our take#
Starting out, or need rails for balance? Get a treadmill. Steady walker with little space, or want to walk at a standing desk? A walking pad can be great. Either way: the one you'll actually use is the right one.
