- Simple balance exercises for steadier treadmill walking
Better balance
Better balance means more confidence on the belt. Always do these next to a counter or sturdy chair.
Feet together#
Stand with your feet together, holding the counter lightly. Try to hold 30 seconds. Then try one hand, then fingertips.
Heel-to-toe stand#
Put one foot directly in front of the other, like on a tightrope. Hold 20–30 seconds, then switch.
Single-leg stand#
Hold the counter and lift one foot slightly. Build up to 30 seconds per side.
Heel-to-toe walk#
Along the counter, walk 10 steps placing heel directly in front of toe.
On the treadmill#
Hold the side rails while you get used to the moving belt, start very slowly, and look ahead rather than at your feet. Let go of the rails gradually as you feel steady.
Talk to your doctor#
If you've fallen recently, feel dizzy, or take medicines that affect balance, ask about a referral to a physical therapist.
