- Treadmill belt slipping, drifting or squeaking? Belt care basics
Belt care
Most belt problems are slipping, drifting to one side, or noise. All have simple first fixes. Unplug the treadmill before touching anything but the bolts.
Drifting to one side#
Adjust the rear roller bolts a quarter turn at a time, with the belt running slowly and nobody on it. Follow your manual.
Slipping#
Usually too loose: tighten both rear bolts equally, a quarter turn at a time. Don't overtighten.
Lubrication#
Many belts need silicone lube every few months or by hours of use. Check the manual: some are maintenance-free.
Call for service#
Burning smells, a frayed belt, grinding noises, or a motor that labours under you.
