Walking through treatment
Many cancer care teams encourage gentle activity. On some days that's a walk; on others it's rest. Both are part of recovery.
Ask your oncology team first#
Especially about low blood counts, infection risk, bone involvement, ports or lines, and neuropathy from treatment. Some hospitals offer exercise programs for people with cancer.
Work with fatigue#
Cancer-related fatigue is real and different from normal tiredness. Short walks at your best time of day, with rest after, often help more than pushing.
Make it safe#
- Hold the rails and use the safety key; balance can be affected.
- Stay hydrated and keep the room cool.
- Skip walking if you have a fever, chest pain, new shortness of breath, or feel faint.
After treatment#
Build back slowly. The 8-week plan is designed for exactly this kind of gentle return.
