- Walking after a hip replacement
A new hip
Walking is central to hip replacement recovery. Your surgical team's hip precautions come first.
Know your precautions#
Ask which movements to avoid and for how long, and when a treadmill is OK.
On the treadmill#
- Slow, flat, rails held, safety key on.
- Even steps; don't pivot on the operated leg.
- Short sessions a few times a day early on.
Call your surgeon if#
The wound is red, hot or leaking, you have a fever, new calf pain or swelling, or sudden worse pain or a 'clunk'.
