Staying cool
Indoors, there's no breeze. You have to bring your own.
Set up the room#
- Point a fan at your upper body. It's the single biggest comfort upgrade.
- Walk in the coolest part of the day, or with the AC on.
- Open a window if the air is cooler outside.
Dress for it#
Light, loose, moisture-wicking clothes. Cotton holds sweat; synthetic and merino let it dry. Keep a towel on the handrail.
Drink#
Keep water in reach and sip when you're thirsty. On hot days, have a glass before you start.
Slow down when it's hot#
Heat makes the same speed feel harder. Drop the speed rather than pushing through. The minutes still count.
Stop if you notice#
- Dizziness, confusion or a headache.
- Nausea, or cold clammy skin.
- Stopping sweating while you feel very hot.
What to do#
Stop, cool down, drink and rest. If symptoms don't improve quickly, get medical help.
