Swollen ankles
Ankles that swell by evening are common, especially in heat or after sitting. Walking and raising your feet often help.
What often helps#
- Short walks through the day to work the calf muscles.
- Feet up above heart level for a while.
- Comfortable, roomy shoes; compression socks if advised.
Get checked if#
Swelling is in one leg only, comes on suddenly, or comes with pain, redness, warmth, or shortness of breath. Also see your doctor if swelling is new or getting worse.
