Walking with kidney disease
Staying active is often encouraged in kidney disease. A few extra things to plan around.
Check with your kidney team#
Ask how much activity is right for you, and about fluid limits, blood pressure and potassium.
Fluids#
If you have a fluid limit, don't drink extra just because you're walking. Follow the amount your team gave you.
Dialysis days#
Many people feel tired after dialysis. Walking on non-dialysis days, or before a session if advised, often works better. Protect your fistula arm from bumps.
Stop if#
You feel dizzy, short of breath, have chest pain, cramping that won't settle, or swelling that's getting worse.
