Teens and treadmills
Teens can use a treadmill safely with a few rules. And how adults talk about it matters as much as the machine.
Safety rules#
- Safety key on, every time; no phones in hands while the belt moves.
- No running backwards, jumping on or off, or playing on it.
- Start and stop at low speed.
Focus on feeling good#
Talk about energy, mood, strength and fun, not weight or calories. Teens are especially sensitive to body comments.
Make it social#
Walk together, share a playlist, or start a family challenge.
Watch for warning signs#
Exercising compulsively, skipping meals, or distress about missing a workout can be signs of an eating disorder. Talk to a doctor.
