Walking with a pacemaker

Most people with a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator (ICD) can and should walk. Your cardiology team sets the limits.

Early weeks#

Gentle walking is usually fine soon after; avoid big arm movements on the device side as your team advises.

Heart-rate settings#

Your device may limit how high your heart rate goes. Ask your team what to expect, and use the talk testIf you can talk but not sing, you're at moderate intensity. If you can't talk, slow down..

Call your team if#

You feel faint, have chest pain, or your ICD gives a shock.

Everyday tips#

Keep phones and headphones away from the device pocket as advised. Treadmills are fine.
