A heart-friendly walk
For many people with heart conditions, regular walking is part of the treatment. The safest start is a supervised one.
Ask about cardiac rehab#
If you've had a heart attack, heart surgery, a stent or heart failure, ask your cardiologist about cardiac rehabilitation. It's a supervised exercise and education program, and it's often covered by insurance.
Get your own numbers#
Ask your doctor how hard you should work, whether any medicines (such as beta blockers) change your heart rate, and what symptoms mean stop.
Pace by feel#
Use the talk testIf you can talk but not sing, you're at moderate intensity. If you can't talk, slow down.: you should be able to talk in full sentences. Warm up and cool down for a few minutes at a slower speed. Avoid steep inclines unless your care team says otherwise.
Stop and call emergency services if#
- Chest pain, pressure or tightness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back.
- Severe shortness of breath, fainting or feeling faint.
- A racing or irregular heartbeat that doesn't settle.
