Walking with a stoma
Walking is usually encouraged in recovery after stoma surgery, and many people with a stoma walk every day.
Early weeks#
Short, gentle walks as your surgical team advises. Avoid lifting and straining.
Support#
A support belt or garment may help, and helps protect against a parastomal hernia. Ask your stoma nurse.
Practical bits#
Empty the pouch before you start, and keep water nearby; ileostomy output can raise dehydration risk.
Ask for help#
Your stoma nurse is the best person for questions about exercise and fit.
