Walking with POTS
With postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, standing makes your heart race. Exercise often helps over time, but upright walking may not be the place to start.
Start horizontal#
Many POTS exercise programs begin with recumbent bikes, rowing or floor exercises, moving to upright activity like walking over weeks or months. Ask your doctor or a physical therapist for a graded plan.
When you walk#
- Fluids and salt as your doctor advises, before you start.
- Compression garments if they help you.
- Slow and short, holding the rails. Stop and sit if you feel faint.
Expect bad days#
Heat, illness and poor sleep can make symptoms worse. Use the 2-minute option or rest.
