- Walking in the first weeks after a heart attack
After a heart attack
Most people are encouraged to start gentle walking soon after a heart attack. Cardiac rehab is the safest way to build back up.
Join cardiac rehab#
Ask for a referral. It's supervised, tailored, and linked to better recovery. If there's a wait, ask what you can safely do at home.
Typical early weeks#
Short, easy walks, often several times a day, building gradually as your team advises. You should be able to talk comfortably.
Stop and call emergency services if#
Chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to arm, jaw or back, severe breathlessness, or fainting.
Emotions are normal#
Fear and low mood after a heart attack are common. Tell your team; support helps.
