Walking with MS
Regular activity is generally encouraged in MS. Heat and fatigue are the two things to plan around.
Keep cool#
Heat can temporarily worsen MS symptoms. Use a fan, cold water and a cool room, and walk at cooler times of day. Symptoms from heat usually settle as you cool down.
Plan for fatigue#
Short walks at your best time of day, with rest after. Many people do better with a few short sessions than one long one.
Balance and safety#
Hold the rails, use the safety keyThe clip-on magnetic key that stops the belt if you fall back., and start slowly. A physical therapist can suggest balance work and walking aids.
Talk to your neurologist#
About the right type and amount of exercise for you, and before starting if you've had a recent relapse.
